New Nikon equipment coming February

Photography News

For the few readers visted here so far :-)   almost all were asking by mail about that there is no information about new Nikon products the coming year on this blog while I comment regularly on DPreview.

So after about 30 e-mails the past 5 days  I thought it might be a good idea to share  the information about new Nikon equipment I have also on my blog. I want make clear that although I get this information from a reliable source it is not from Nikon directly. Nor my contact or I work for Nikon. I want to make clear that Nikon only gives complete information about new products and release dates. The best thing to do is to keep a good eye on websites as DPreview for official and stated product news and information in full detail.

The information mentioned below is based on order/wholesale information from Japan, I did not collect it from other blogs, websites or other contacts I have who know more.

> A new 18+ MP camera (I cannot tell the model no. or any details) February 2010.

> 2 new zoom lenses (1 is expected release February 2010) my contact thinks it will be replacement for 24-120 and 80-400

> 3 new prime lenses, probable a new fourth also based on stock information.

> Several new items related to flash, assecoires

There is lots of debate going on about the name of the upcoming camera and the sensor size. It might be Nikon D800, D900. I can’t unfortunately give more inofmration, however I keep calling it till the offcial announcement D800 ;-)

There will be for sure new cameras’ this year aimed at the lower segments as well. Probable we can expect them at the end of summer together with a totally new camera concept. This is however not based on any stock information but from the same contact. He thinks that we even see a model placed below the D3000.

I will stop reacting on mails related to new equipment. You can find it in my comments on DPreview or here on tihs blog if I have anything what I can share.

Thanks Michel. Are you really sure a new model will come out this February? It is only about one mont left. Do you think the replacement of 80-400 will be a rumored 50-500mm lens?

  2. admin Says:

    To Mark:
February release is the information I got.
No, I do not think a 50-500mm will be it.

  3. Dan Says:

Of the upcoming primes… I assume it will be in February as well? And would it happen to be the 85mm f1.4 af-s that has long been awaited and rumored?

  4. oxygen Says:

Rumors – Soon to be announced:

Two lenses, AFS 80-400mm VR II nano and AFS 35mm f/1.4

There is also a GPS unit with some form of computational aid that bolts under the new D700 replacement ? this rumor i didn’t understand and could not translate properly. I also heard that the replacement will carry a Sony full frame sensor and will be weak in the video department, probably limited to 720p.

There is also talks of releasing the 12MP D3 sensor in a D90 style body before summer.

Make what you want of it :)

  5. Adam Says:

Think the D300s is going to stick around for long? The 7D really makes for a tempting purchase in this range.

These are the items I expect Nikon to release this February:

    1. Nikon SB-700

    2. Zoom No. 1: Nikkor 24-120mm VR

    3. Zoom No. 2: Nikkor 100-500mm VR

    4. Prime No. 1: Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G AF-S

    5. Prime No. 2: Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G AF-S VR

    6. Prime No. 3: Nikkor 135mm f/2.0G AF-S VR

    7. Nikon D900 (24mp, slightly better low-light capabilities as the D3x)
    – this is the item I am most uncertain that Nikon will release

Logically, Nikon would release a new 18mp FX body in a body similar to the D3s rather than in a smaller D700-like body.

If the 18mp will however be a DX body, then this possible and quite likely.

Normally i don’t respond to a post like this, but since i really liked it I just had to give you a thumbs up :)

    exciting, exciting, exciting!

For Dan: the only information I have is that the order status of 3 prime lenses changed (limited) I haven’t got a sign that there will be three new prime lenses this end of February.

For LGo: my contact also expects a new fast prime with a focal length above 105mm. Related to camera, the information I have is that it will not be a DX camera and that it will have a 18MP+ sensor and that it will not be the same sensor as in the 3Dx

For Mini Laptop: I see an increase in visitors since that Nikon Rumors mentioned my name and linked to this blog. I also want to mention that Received about 40 mails today about (possible) release information of Nikon products, I do not put them here all.

Also I want to add that Nikon Rumors and the DPreview forums are the better places to share news and rumors on upcoming releases.
I will place and react however on the information I get by my own contacts.

To all who asked for a way to become registered. I’m sorry but it is not possible yet. Because of time, spam and technical reasons but it will change soon.

Thanks Admin for the nudge that the new Nikon body will have an FX sensor.

I now realize that the 18mp FF sensor must be the one made by Kodak … the same one as installed on the Leia M9. But with Nikon’s great track record in tweaking the D3x and D3s sensor, it will likely perform even better than the Leia M9.

What I am not certain now is whether the new Nikon body with the 18mp FF sensor will be in a rangefinder body (like the Leica M9) or in a D3s or D700 type body.

Given that Canon will soon be releasing a 3D (combining the best of the Canon 7D and 5D Mk II), then Nikon will most likely release this in a D700-type body to be competitive with the Canon 3D.

Given that the Kodak 18mp FF sensor is a CCD, it will not suffer from the rolling shutter that afflicts the current crop of CMOS-equipped Nikon dSLRs. So 1080p HD video is eminently possible in this new Nikon FF body.

So did I just solve the mystery surrounding this new Nikon FF 18mp body with 1080p HD video slated for release in February? :-)

  11. Jude Says:

I was wondering if anyone has heard what kind of video compression this new rumored Nikon will Have for its HD video? Will it be H.264? Or will it still be the MotionJPEG compression?
