Book Review ~ click!
One of the most unusual ‘not special’ photo books I bought in recent years is “click!.” In short the book is a huge collection of photos’ from the famous world wide operating stock agency “Getty Images.”
click!
This heavy and square sized book is in Europe in conjunction with Getty images published by Endeavour, a small sized London based publishing company which is not really known for publishing photography books. Besides click! the company published one more book in conjunction with Getty Images, named “look!” I hope to review this book on a later date.
Unusual?
What makes click! unusual? It is the way the images are sometimes presented in this massive book of over 600 pages with (near) page or double page sized images. As in more photography books images are divided into categories, from that of Transportation to News, Sports, Characters and so on. The fun or confrontation is sometimes the way how 2 images oppositely are presented with a certain (indirect) relation. As a funny example an image focusing on the long fingernails of athlete Gail Devers besides an image of the nails of a large bald eagle in Alaska. It breaks the typical hierarchy in presenting images you often see in a photography book.
Many of the images presented in the book are a showcase of what was used in mostly press and magazine publications since the early 20th century. Many of them are well known and are of well-known photographers, winning prices in press and photography contests. The book gives in general a good overview of news photography the past century and past decade. Almost all of the images presented in this book can be obtained by the Getty Images website.
Quality, binding and presentation
A heavy hard covered book with a paper fly-leaf cover presenting a simple graphic of the detail of an old lens, the title and the Getty images logo on the back a small impression of 12 thumbnails of images in the book. although published by an English company, it’s printed in China. The binding is good, I have this book about a year and it is watched by many, no loose pages and no binding coming loose. Paper is of a nice thick quality and images are well printed, no smudges or ink stains due to the printing. Most of the images have a short description in English of the event or main subject under it. In the back of the book are the captions and the revering to the pages in German, Spanish, French, Italian and Dutch.
